CASE ALERT Update: Chlorpyrifos Lawsuits
Our team of attorneys is currently investigating claims that chlorpyrifos may cause neurological damage in children.
What We Know About Chlorpyrifos
Chlorpyrifos is a pesticide. It was permitted for residential and commercial use in the US from 1965 to 2000. Since 2000, it has only been permitted for commercial use in the US, where it is used heavily in agriculture and on golf courses. Popular brand names for chlorpyrifos include Lorsban and Dursban, both of which are manufactured by Corteva Agriscience. Companies manufacturing and selling generic chlorpyrifos include Gharda Chemicals International, ADAMA Agricultural Solutions Ltd., and Cheminova.
On August 18, 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule revoking all tolerances for chlorpyrifos. This means that the EPA is effectively banning chlorpyrifos from use on food in the US. The EPA explained that it is banning chlorpyrifos because “the risk from aggregate exposure from the use of chlorpyrifos” does not meet “the safety standards of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).” The EPA noted that it has been reviewing scientific data on chlorpyrifos “for over a decade,” and that the data supports the conclusion that chlorpyrifos potentially impacts the developing brain with “adverse outcomes” in several neurological domains including:
- Cognitive
- Anxiety and emotion
- Social interactions
- Neuromotor functions
Simply put, the EPA is banning chlorpyrifos from use on food in the US because some studies suggest that chlorpyrifos may cause neurological damage in children.
