CASE ALERT: BARD POWER PORT LAWSUITS

Our team of attorneys is currently investigating claims that defective Bard Power Port implantable port catheters can fracture, cause infection, and cause thrombosis.

What We Know About Bard Power Ports

Implantable port catheters were first introduced in 1982. Bard Power Port is a brand of implantable port catheter manufactured by Bard Access Systems, Inc. of Arizona.

Here is how a Bard Power Port works. A doctor implants the Bard Power Port beneath the patient’s skin, attaching the catheter to the patient’s blood vessel. Medical professionals can then administer medication to the patient by injecting it into the Bard Power Port.

Bard Power Ports are designed for patients requiring frequent, long term medication injections, because receiving such care from an implantable port catheter can be less painful and damaging to a patient’s blood vessels than repeated needle pricks. More than 90% of patients with a Bard Power Port are undergoing cancer treatment

Bard Power Port Lawsuits

Hundreds of cancer patients and other plaintiffs are filing lawsuits against Bard, alleging that Bard Power Ports are defective for 3 reasons:

  • Bard manufactures Bard Power Ports with a metal (barium sulfate) which breaks down when exposed to human blood, even though alternatives are available.
  • Bard fails to coat its Bard Power Ports with a plastic sheath which would prevent the metal from breaking down, even though it has the technology to do so.
  • Bard manufactures Bard Power Ports with palpation bumps which render no benefit but increase risk of infection.

Plaintiffs allege that those defects cause the Bard Power Port to injure them in 3 ways:

  • Bard Power Port fractures inside the patient’s body
  • Infection
  • Thrombosis (blood clots)

The lawsuits are consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the United States District Court for the District of ArizonaSee IN RE: Bard Implanted Port Catheter Products Liability Litigation, 2:23-md-03081-DGC (D. Ariz.).
