The History of Toxins at Camp Lejeune
In 1982, the Marine Corps discovered toxins, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) has determined that past exposures in the 1950s to 1980s to TCE, PCE, vinyl chloride, and other contaminants in the drinking water at Camp Lejeune likely increased the risk of cancers, adverse birth outcomes, and other adverse health effects on residents (including infants and children), civilian workers, Marines, and Naval personnel.
In particular, water from at least three water treatment plants were contaminated—located at Hadnot Point, Tarawa Terrace, and Holcomb Boulevard. At Tarawa Terrace, contamination reportedly occurred between November 1957 to February 1987 and came from the waste disposal practices of ABC One-Hour Cleaners, an off-base dry cleaning company. At Hadnot Point, supply wells were reportedly contaminated from August 1953 to January 1985, coming from multiple sources: leaking underground storage tanks, industrial area spills, and waste disposal sites. At Holcomb Boulevard, the drinking water supply system received contaminated water from Hadnot Point’s contaminated system between 1972 and 1985. Hadnot Point’s water distribution services provided water to the Mainside barracks, Hospital Point family housing, and family housing at Midway Park, Paradise Point, and Berkeley Manor. Tarawa Terrace’s water distribution services provided water to Tarawa Terrace family housing and the Knox Trailer Park. Holcomb Boulevard’s system provided water to family housing at Midway Park, Paradise Point, Berkeley Manor, and Watkins Village.
