Justice Department and Navy Plan to Expedite Payments Camp Lejeune Victims
Oct 19, 2023
According to a report by NBC News, the Justice Department and Navy announced a new settlement offer late last month for people who were adversely affected by contaminated water at Camp Lejeune.
Under the terms of the settlement, named the Elective Option, people with claims under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act can resolve them more quickly and efficiently than they would through litigation. According to Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, “The Elective Option is a critical step in bringing relief to qualifying claimants impacted by the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, who will now have an avenue for receiving quick and early resolution of claims under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.”
People with claims related to Camp Lejeune water exposure can accept expedited payment based on the severity of their injuries and the length of their exposure. The payouts authorized by the Elective Option range from $100,000 to $450,000 for living claimants. In addition, claimants who have died from their Camp Lejeune water exposure can receive an additional $100,000, increasing the settlement range from $200,000 to $550,000. People who were affected still have the option of taking their claims to court and fighting for more money.
