Specialized Bicycle Recall
On October 13, 2021 the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. of Morgan Hill, CA announced a recall of Specialized Tarmac SL7 Bicycles and Frame sets. The products were recalled due to the risk of the fork steerer tube cracking or breaking after impact or a stress event, such as potholes or pavement defects. The potential breakage poses a risk to riders. According to the recall notice, nearly 7,000 units were sold at nationwide retailers between July 2020 through August 2021 for between $3,300 and $15,000. The bicycles are manufactured in Taiwan. To date, no injuries have been reported, although there have been two incidents where the steerer tube broke or cracked upon or after impact. More information can be found on the CPSC website. Hobby Lobby Recalls Wood Stools
The CPSC and Hobby Lobby Stores Inc., of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma announced a recall on October 6, 2021 involving white wooden stools sold from June – July 2021. The stools, which are about 2 feet tall and 15 inches wide, have been recalled due to a defect that can cause the stools to break during use, posing a risk of fall or injury to the user. According to the recall alert, customers should stop using the stools immediately. There had been 6 reported injuries as of the date of the recall. Heater-Cooler Devices & NTM Infection
On October 13, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a letter to healthcare providers with updated information regarding Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections in patients who have undergone cardiothoracic surgery using heater-cooler devices. The letter explains that two heater-cooler manufacturers, CardioQuip and Gentherm Medical LLC, have announced voluntary recalls for updated labeling with “interim mitigation strategies” to help reduce the risk of NTM infections. Two additional manufacturers, Terumo and Maquet, also announced voluntary recalls to tell facilities to discontinue use of their heater-cooler devices because these manufacturers will not be pursuing a cleaning and disinfection protocol that addresses the risks of NTM infection.
